ROBERT A DAVIS JR. SELECTED TO JOIN ELITE LEADERS FROM 30 COUNTRIES THROUGHOUT THE ASIA-PACIFIC REGION AT THE ASIA 21 YOUNG LEADERS SUMMIT IN SINGAPORE

(Singapore, October 1, 2007) – On October 5–7, 2007, Robert Davis, Director of the Chicago Public Schools’ Chinese language program and Director of the Confucius Institute in Chicago is to join nearly two hundred emerging leaders under the age of forty from thirty countries across the Asia-Pacific region and the U.S. that will gather at the Shangri-la Hotel in Singapore for the Asia Society’s Second Annual Asia 21 Young Leaders Summit – Moving Forward Together: Inclusive and Sustainable Growth in the Asia Pacific. Selected from among nearly a thousand nominees, Robert Davis will join other leaders from the realms of business, government, academia, media, civil society, and the arts to examine the role of values-based leadership and to find new collaborative approaches for addressing the region’s most pressing issues. 07.13.07 :: The Office of Language and Cultural Education has been awarded a $100,000 Illinois State Board of Education Arts and Foreign Language Assistance Grant. This three-year grant will enable Chicago Public Schools to expand and improve its Arabic World Language Program in both elementary and high schools. Currently, three high schools offer Arabic as a world language. This grant will provide funding for the expansion of the program to two additional high schools and two elementary after-school programs as well as for curriculum and professional development.

06.12.07 :: The Office of Language and Cultural Education’s Chicago Chinese Connections (C3) Program has been awarded a $201,477 from the U.S. Department of State for a 6 week Chinese language and culture institute for 20 CPS high school students.   The 6 week institute will take place at East China Normal University in Shanghai, China.  Students will receive daily Chinese language instruction, stay with Chinese families and experience the historical and modern sides of China through weekly educational and cultural excursions.

05.20.07 :: ACCESS for ELLs® score reports will be delivered to schools during the week of May 28.

02.23.07 :: The Office of Language and Cultural Education has been awarded the following grant awards:

STARTALK Chinese Language Grant.  $99,996 This grant will provide the opportunity for 20 Chinese World Language Program students to attend a 4 week Chinese summer language institute at DePaul University.

STARTALK Arabic  Language Grant
. $102,024 This grant will provide the opportunity for 20 Arabic World Language Program students to attend a 4 week Arabic summer language institute at DePaul University.

04.09.07 :: The ELL Subgroup Makes AYP! – As reported by the Illinois State Board of Education, the ELL subgroup met and exceeded the State AYP Minimum Target of 47.5% Meeting/Exceeding Standards in both Reading and Mathematics. Congratulations to all. Click here to see the report.
